International Media Centre: Director, Prof. Ron Cook
Established in 1993, the IMC is an innovative partnership project that brings together academic excellence and the media and communications industries. It is an independent Centre of the University of Salford and founded the annual Television from the Nations and Regions conference in 1994 which it has continued to organise.
The IMC initiates conferences, publications, research and consultancy and provides training and production facilities. The Centre offers postgraduate courses in TV Documentary, Scriptwriting, Fiction Film Production, Journalism, Music Composition and Performance and a doctoral programme. It also provides offices for a range of organisations and independent production companies. The Centre has enjoyed long-term relationships with leading broadcasters and has a long-term education, training and programme supply partnership with Channel M, Manchester’s own local TV station.
The IMC also has international partnerships with film and media schools in Cuba, China, Finland and Spain.
The University of Salford has a major commitment to Media education, training and research and is currently exploring the opportunities represented by mediacity:uk to provide a new campus for the Faculty of Arts and Media within this major development.
MediaCityUK
Located at the heart of Manchester’s iconic waterfront at Salford Quays, MediaCityUK will be the largest purpose-built media community in Europe. The UK’s first shared media infrastructure, it will ultimately provide opportunities for more than 1,000 businesses in the creative and digital industries, and generate 15,000 jobs. The £3bn project is being developed and managed by Peel Media, a division of the Peel Group, working with a range of partners including Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, the Northwest Regional Development Agency and Salford City Council.
A unique environment for the sector to grow and prosper, MediaCityUK will be a place for people to work, live and visit. In addition to state-of-the-art TV studios and an unparalleled communications structure, the site will boast a public piazza capable of staging events for up to 9,000.
The first phase of the development is due for completion in 2011, when the BBC will relocate five London-based departments to the Quays, including Sport and Radio 5 Live.
